The Challenge
When COVID-19 arrived, Adventist HealthCare faced compounding staffing pressures: recruiter illness, childcare disruptions as schools closed, and an immediate surge in patient census, all at once. The system’s emergency department had already been grappling with close to 40 open nursing vacancies before the pandemic began. COVID transformed a difficult staffing environment into a full-scale operational crisis.
With internal HR resources stretched thin, Adventist needed a partner who could pivot quickly, take ownership, and execute, not just support from the sidelines.

Our Solution
Hueman stepped in as a true operational extension of Adventist’s team. Drawing on experience managing remote recruiting operations before remote work was common, Hueman’s RPO leadership assumed day-to-day team management and operational accountability, allowing Adventist’s internal leaders to focus on immediate patient care priorities.
Key initiatives deployed during the pandemic:
Surge Float Pool Design & Execution: Hueman collaborated with Adventist to create temporary staff positions under a disaster-relief elevated-pay code, enabling the health system to quickly build a flexible internal labor reserve.
Dedicated COVID-Only Site Staffing: When Washington Adventist Hospital was repurposed as a COVID-only facility, Hueman assumed full recruiting and coordination responsibilities for that location, working directly with site leaders, managing scheduling, and filling vacancies without requiring Adventist HR bandwidth.
Occupational Health Clinic (OHC) Integration: Adventist built a dedicated OHC to expedite new hire processing. Hueman managed recruiting pipelines to feed that accelerated onboarding model.
Centralized Process Standardization: Hueman helped Adventist rapidly shift from entity-level recruiting to a centralized model, a structural move that has remained in place and is widely credited as one of the most impactful changes in the partnership's history.
Digital Recruitment Marketing Activation: Hueman deployed targeted digital recruiting strategies, including candidate-nurturing campaigns, social-channel outreach, and emerging digital tactics, to quickly drive volume across the roles and locations that needed it most.
Our Results
Within two months, Hueman hired 200 occupational health candidates for the surge float pool. The float pool model was so effective that Adventist has continued to optimize and use it system-wide.
